Bollywood is the name given to the Mumbai based film industry in India. It is one of the largest film producing places of the world, producing more than 1000 films per year and employing millions of people in the industry. Bollywood is commonly referred to as Hindi cinema in India, although the films use the languages of Hindi, Urdu and English. It employs people from all over India. Raja Harishchandra made by Dadasaheb Phalke in the year 1913 was the first silent feature film in India. Alam Ara made by Ardeshir Irani in the year 1931 was the first Indian talking movie. It was a super hit in those years.
In the early days of Bollywood, the movies were made on low budget. However, Bollywood films are now multi-million dollar productions and the actors and directors earn millions of dollars for a single film. In recent years the action and science-fiction films involve high quality action and special effects for which the overseas experts are also employed.
Music and songs are very important for
the success of a Bollywood film sometime it becomes the lifeline of the
film. To give full value for their money, the Hindi movie contains all
the ingredients of a masala (spice) film like songs, dances, love
triangles, comedy, fight scenes, emotions etc. The story involves
family ties, love triangles, sacrifice, corrupt politicians,
kidnappers, court scenes, Murder etc. The films also contain a good
dose of sex and violence scenes. Some art films are also made that
contain sophisticated stories but they are not appreciated by most of
the Indian genre.
About 2 decades ago, the Bollywood movies were shot in different parts
of India such as Kashmir, Shimla, Dehradun, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Lucknow
etc. But the viewers want to see new locations. The movies shot in
Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States
of America and European countries have proved a real box office draw in
the recent past.
